Royal castle hotel stay Northern Germany

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region is known for its beautiful landscapes and rich history with some of Germany’s most stunning castles, and last month I stayed overnight at a very unique castle hotel in this region of Northern Germany!

Unfortunately I have not visited any of the other castles in this region yet, since we only drove through it for an overnight stay, on our way back from a road trip through South Sweden.

There is however enough to see and do here to come back for!

Castles in Northern Germany

One of the most popular castles in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Schwerin Castle. Often called the ‘Neuschwanstein of the North’, this castle sits on an island in Lake Schwerin and is said to look like a real life fairy tale.

Inside there's a museum that showcases lavish rooms and a collection of European art from the 19th century.

Other impressive castles in the region are: the 16th century Renaissance-style Güstrow Castle, which also houses a museum. And the Baroque-style Ludwigslust Palace, known as the ’Versailles of the North’.

These sites do not only tell the stories of the past, but also provide stunning examples of architecture and design in a beautiful natural setting.

Unfortunately you can not stay overnight in any of the above mentioned castles and palaces, however for our overnight stay in Northern Germany we found one where this is possible:

Bernsteinschloss Wendorf

Located in the heart of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region, near Schwerin, the stunning Bernsteinschloss is now an extensive and classy hotel, with free parking and all the amenities you can expect from a 5 star hotel.

The Amber Castle is part of the Schloss Wendorf estate, which includes a historic manor house dating back to the early 19th century. This manor house, built in the Neoclassical style, was originally the residence of the noble von Bassewitz family.

Over the years, the estate changed hands several times and underwent various renovations and restorations. The castle itself is a more recent addition to the estate and was designed to showcase amber, often referred to as 'Baltic gold', which is abundant in the region.

It's a popular venue for events, weddings, and exclusive stays, providing a unique experience in a setting that perfectly combines modern luxury with historical charm.

While Bernsteinschloss does not have the deep historical roots of some other German castles, it is an example of how historic estates in the region are being revitalized and repurposed, while still paying homage to local traditions and natural resources.

Unique castle hotel stay Northern Germany

The castle currently houses 9 unique suites situated in the historic building itself. But there are also many other accommodations available in the neighboring houses and modern chalets on the castle’s estate, forming a small village.

The castle suites are quite extensive, ranging from 30, to 75 and even 135 m2. Most are full apartments with their own kitchen, living room, bedroom, en-suite bathroom all in the original historic style, providing a unique experience! That's why this castle hotel in Northern Germany truly made us feel like royalty.

Get an impression through my own pictures:

The amber-colored castle is set amidst Wendorf's forests and meadows, a peaceful and scenic setting for both hiking, leisurely strolls, exploration and horse-back riding. Bernsteinreiter, right next to the castle, offers all that and more.

From pony-rides for the little ones to horse-riding lessons and adventurous routes with the staff and many friendly horses from their own stables.

Swimming in the castle’s lake, while relaxing at the on-site Spa is also possible. Go golfing at the Winston golf resort and explore the beaches along the Baltic sea.

Or discover stunning palaces and other historic sites in the vicinity of Wendorf, all great activities near this castle hotel, which I'd love to come back for.

We also had the pleasure to have dinner at the on-site restaurant,"Cheval Blanc", which serves regional cuisine and local delicacies. Lunch and dinner can be enjoyed in the classy horse-riding themed interior or on the sunny terrace with side views upon the castle.

I hope I was able to inspire you with this royal castle stay, a true must experience, in my opinion! And hopefully I can come back for more of the beautiful Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region next year, as I always love to explore more of Germany’s nature, towns and historic sites.
